Types of Coffee Tree Found in Kona

Most coffee drinkers don’t consider the varietal of the bean they drink. However, much like fine wines, the varietal is important and can affect the taste and quality of the coffee. It of course can also affect the price.

Although some varietals may taste similar to one another, others stand out.

Coffee varietals can differ in many ways, including: the yield potential, susceptibility to coffee leaf rust, pests and other diseases, quality of coffee, size of the bean, etc. It is important for a coffee farm to have a variety of coffee trees. This helps build a little security around the farmer’s crop. If something affects one varietal and diminishes the yield of coffee that year it may not affect another.

Typica makes up the majority of coffee trees in Kona. Our Organic 100% Kona Coffee is made from the beans produced by Typica Tree. It is the most popular varietal and is known for its cleanliness, sweetness and tends to have excellent cupping quality.

Plant Quality: this tree is very adapted to the coldest conditions.

Found Commonly: around the world with a concentration in Central America.

Yield Potential: Low
Bean Size: Large    
Cupping potential: Very Good   



Bourbon on the other hand is a high yielding coffee plant and tends to produce more cherries per season. The Bourbon variety is a natural mutation of Typica and is known for having a complex and sweet flavor profile.

Plant Quality: relatively low production and excellent cup quality.

Bean Size: Average    

Cupping Potential: Very good   



Geisha Varietal has gained a lot of recognition and this varietal has won many cupping competitions. It has a huge range of notes in one coffee cup and has taken the top honor in the Cup of Excellence events around the world.

Yield Potential: Medium

Bean Size: Average    
Cupping potential: Exceptional   



SL28 was an accident and although these plants aren’t more durable or resistant that original control variety it’s cupping quality is far more incredible.

Plant quality: This tree is drought tolerant

Found commonly: in Kenya, Malawi, Uganda, Zimbabwe.

Yield Potential: VERY high

Cupping potential: Exceptional
